17th June 2022: The challenge of governance is to ensure that progress reaches the remotest corners of the country. The mandis and the rural link roads connecting them are one of the most crucial assets of the state of Punjab. Historically, it has been a hard and manual process to create an inventory, track the repair, and construction of rural link roads across the state. Not to mention the update of the same records. The overall data creation, and digitization of the physical assets of mandis, and their day-to-day functioning have been difficult to bring online until now.

Punjab Mandi Board has established a GIS Command and Control Center to combat these problems, bringing a framework to the data collection on the ground, with a team of over 300 employees across Punjab, including Joint Engineers, SDOs, and nodal officers trained on the system to maintain statewide consistency.

The Punjab Mandi Board and Department of Governance Reform collaborated with the implementing agency DronaMaps and have already digitised and incorporated 110 Mandis and 24,262 rural link roads in the GIS command center. We are creating a framework where the team on the ground can collaborate on full-motion video feeds from drones to geotag areas that need repair, all on a central command and control center. To this end, with DronaMaps we have established a GIS command center at the Punjab Mandi Board office fostering innovation from within with Indian startups, says IAS Ravi bhagat, Secretary, Punjab Mandi Board.

Jasminder Pal Singh, Head of SeMT((MeitY) for Punjab highlights the objectives of the new system to “provide the department an accurate understanding of the state of roads and mandis. Over the next few months, Punjab Mandi Board plans to integrate this citizen feedback on the status of roads and with the inventory and transactions happening in Mandis as well. In addition, as most data is being collected through drones and mobile phones, it would go through automated screening procedures and manual geotagging to allow supervisors the ability to zero down in which areas the road repair work is happening effectively.”

One of Kolkata’s oldest bakeries, at The Lalit Great Eastern Hotel, established in 1830, has been awarded the Culinary Heritage Recognition plaque by the Kolkata chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). Asia’s first luxury hotel, The Great Eastern Kolkata has a beautiful structure, rich history, and a great legacy of visitors, delectable food, and the iconic bakery. The Lalit Bakery is the oldest traditional bakery in the city that offers authentic sweets, multi-cultural selections and has lived through decades of changes and revolutions.

David Wilson, who built Wilson’s Hotel, opened the bakery in mid-1830 before he built the hotel, which was inaugurated on November 19, 1840. It was the only popular bakery for Britishers. To keep the sense of history about the hotel, the huge Side Flue bakery oven, which replaced the old beehive oven, has been used in bits and parts in the present bakery. Back then, there used to be a multiple shops or a departmental store on the ground floor. To quote Rudyard Kipling’s description of it in The City of Dreadful Night, “a man could walk in at one end, buy a complete outfit, a wedding present, or seeds for the garden, have an excellent meal, a Burra peg and if the barmaid was agreeable, walk out at the other end engaged to be married”.

SUNREF (Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Energy Finance) Housing India programme held its 4th regional promotional event in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to highlight the importance of green affordable housing to the key stakeholders of the event.

The SUNREF Housing India programme was launched by the AgenceFrancaise de Developpement (AFD) in partnership with the National Housing Bank (NHB) in July 2017 and co-funded by the European Union (EU).

The event was attended by representatives of banks, housing finance companies (HFCs), real estate developers, government agencies, green-building experts, architects, and green material producers from southern states.

SK Hota, Managing Director, NHB, said, “NHB, since inception, through its various refinance and direct finance activities has been working to facilitate the supply of affordable housing finance. Access to affordable finance is as pivotal as the depth of the financial system and NHB through its varied and accessible financial services has always supported the growth of the housing sector. The SUNREF India program supported by the EU, AFD, and implemented by the NHB is one such program that promotes green affordable housing in the country by supporting the local financial institutions to empower them to finance small and medium-size projects of public and private promoters. India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F) fund is a cooperation between the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and the Israel Innovation Authority, Government of Israel to promote, facilitate and support joint industrial R&D projects, between companies from India and Israel to address the challenges in the agreed ‘Focus Sectors’. DST and the Israel Innovation Authority have jointly created a joint $40 Million USD I4F fund with equal contribution from both sides over a period of five years. I4F is aimed to promote, facilitate and support joint Industrial R&D between India & Israel which would lead to co-development and commercialization of innovative technologies benefiting both the countries. The Global Innovation & Technology Alliance (GITA) is appointed to implement the I4F program in India, while Israel Innovation Authority is the implementing agency in Israel.

ARIO National Educational Excellence Awards 2022, which was organized on May 22, 2022, became a landmark event as it honoured several respectable Educationist in the country. Jaswinder Gardner, who is a Bollywood actor, celebrity designer, entrepreneur, social activist and humanitarian, served as the chief guest for the event. The award ceremony was organized and supervised by Neha R Banerjee, Director, ARIO Group of Companies.
