Cross-Kingdom Conservation of Sleep-Related Genes in Chlamydomonas Sheds Light on Fundamental Biological Process

Mysuru, Karnataka, 3 April 2025 — A groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry has uncovered compelling evidence that sleep, a behavior once thought to be exclusive to complex organisms, may have its roots in the simplest forms of life. The research, led by an international team of scientists, identifies 112 putative sleep-related genes in the single-celled green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, suggesting that the molecular mechanisms regulating sleep have been conserved across kingdoms for over 500 million years.

Key Findings:

  • Evolutionary Conservation: The study reveals that sleep-related genes in humans share significant similarities with those in Chlamydomonas, highlighting an evolutionary continuum from unicellular organisms to mammals.
  • Novel Discoveries: Among the identified genes are previously uncharacterized proteins, such as CHLRE_16g686650v5, which exhibit high sequence similarity to human sleep genes, opening new avenues for understanding sleep regulation.
  • Functional Insights: Well-known proteins like casein kinase I (CKI) and voltage-dependent calcium channels, critical for circadian rhythms and signaling in humans, were also found in Chlamydomonas, reinforcing their pleiotropic functions.

Implications for Science and Medicine:

This research challenges traditional views of sleep as a purely neural phenomenon, proposing instead that its origins lie in fundamental cellular processes. “Our findings suggest that sleep’s essential functions—energy conservation, cellular repair, and adaptation—may have evolved early in life’s history,” said Pandi-Perumal, one of the study’s lead authors. “Our current findings related to putative sleep genes in Chlamydomonas, a flagellated autotrophic plankton, could revolutionize how we view the evolution of human sleep genes, which eventually helps to study sleep disorders and develop potential therapies by targeting conserved pathways.”

“If sleep orthologs exist in algae, it forces us to rethink its purpose,” noted Dr. Chidambaram, co-corresponding author and a professor at the Department of Pharmacology, JSS College of Pharmacy, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru, Karnataka, India. “This work bridges the gap between microbiology and neuroscience, offering a unified framework to decode sleep’s mysteries through phylogenomics.”

According to Dr. Saravanan, one of the co-authors and Bioinformatics expert, “This study presents an interesting computational framework that enhances cross-genomics comparison by integrating multiple phylogenomic analysis of sleep genes such as Gene ontology, Interpro sites analysis, Repeats analysis and Pathway analysis, offering significant improvements in accuracy, efficiency, and analytical depth.”

According to Prof. Abraham, a Former Professor & Head of the Post-Graduate Department of Botany, at The American College, Madurai, who is one of the co-authors of the study said, “This is an exemplary work, even though we say it ourselves. This phylogenomics study unveils unprecedented insights into evolutionary and functional parallels between putative sleep genes of Chlamydomonas and human sleep genes.”

Overall, the results of this study present an interesting and in-depth analysis of Cross-Kingdom Genomic Conservation of Putative Human Sleep-Related Genes in Chlamydomonas, uncovering previously unreported evolutionary and functional parallels, particularly in protein kinase domains involved in the information storage and processing, providing new insights into conserved genetic elements and their implications in cellular processes.

Animal Rights Groups Slam Sodexo for Neglecting Cage-Free Egg Promise in India

New Delhi, March 29, 2025- Bharat Initiative for Accountability (BIA), a coalition of Indian animal welfare organisations, staged a protest today at Jantar Mantar, demanding that multinational food-services giant Sodexo fulfil its global cage-free egg commitment in India. Despite pledging to source 100% cage-free eggs worldwide by 2025, Sodexo has made virtually no progress in India, with less than 1% of its eggs cage-free—while successfully transitioning in Europe and North America.

“Sodexo claims to be a sustainability leader, yet it continues sourcing eggs from cruel battery cages in India while shifting to cage-free eggs in Europe and North America,” said Aarti Bhavana, Director of Corporate Engagement, BIA. “This blatant double standard is unacceptable. India is not a dumping ground for unethical products. Sodexo has viable solutions at its disposal— it’s time to act before the December deadline.”

With just nine months until the self-imposed deadline, BIA is ramping up pressure to ensure multinational corporations honour their pledges in India with the same urgency as in the West.

In another significant development, S. Gulbarg Singh Basi has been elected as the first Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors, marking a new chapter in the Council’s governance and strategic direction.

Under S. Amrit Pal Singh Sachdeva’s leadership, the GSC has made remarkable progress in advancing Sikh values and global initiatives. The Council continues to drive impactful projects, including PEHEL, which now operates over 80 centers in Punjab, India, the Maa Boli Punjabi projects (India, UAE/Dubai & Kenya), Women Empowerment programs, Interfaith initiatives, and the Mool Nanakshahi Calendar campaign. In addition, Global Sikhi Scholars and the “Sikhi in the next 5, 10, 20 years and beyond” initiative are shaping the future of Sikh thought, education, and engagement worldwide.

Los Angeles, CA – March 27, 2025 – The highly anticipated Miss & Mrs. India Global USA and Miss & Mrs. Punjaban USA pageants successfully took place on March 16 in Los Angeles, hosted by the esteemed nonprofit organization India Global USA. This prestigious event was a vibrant celebration of culture, talent, and empowerment, bringing together participants from across the United States, Canada, and beyond.

Led by Kimi Verma—an actress, MBA, and nutritionist from Stanford University—the event stood out as one of the most memorable tributes to South Asian heritage, diversity, and women’s empowerment. “This year’s pageant was perhaps our most dynamic yet, with participants hailing from various backgrounds and cultures, including California, Canada, Indiana, the Bay Area, Central Valley, and even Pakistan Punjab. Many of our participants come from professional fields such as medicine, business, and education, reflecting the deep value that South Asians place on education and career growth,” stated Kimi Verma, President of India Global USA.

The contestants showcased their exceptional talents across various segments, including the talent round and the Q&A session, demonstrating their confidence, grace, and skill. A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the Power Woman Award to Archana Nirvana, founder of Naturally Desi Restaurant in San Diego, and Rennu Dhillon, founder of Genius Kids Foundation in the Bay Area. Both honorees were recognized for their significant contributions to their communities and industries.

The distinguished panel of judges, comprising filmmakers, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders such as Kavi Raz, C.J. Virdi, Sanya Kerney, Sukhjeet Babbar, Smita Vasant, and Manveer Brar—had the challenging task of selecting winners from a highly talented group of contestants.

The pageant was expertly hosted by the dynamic Sunny Babbar, Dean of Bakersfield High School, alongside Kimi Verma, adding charm and energy to the evening.

In an exciting announcement, all participants of the 2025 pageant will have the opportunity to be part of the Hindi-English web series “Vibe Toh Hai”, set to be filmed in California in August/September.
